Chapter Summary English & Hindi
English Summary
In “The Unity of Indian Culture” Humayun Kabir explains that till recently the Aryans were regarded as the earliest invaders of India. Modern research has shown that there were pre-Aryan civilizations higher than the Aryan hordes. Successive invaders — Greeks, Sakas, Huns and many others — came as conquerors but were absorbed into the Indian racial cauldron.
Today whatever is Indian is a blend of many different strains and elements. In spite of this variety, there is a remarkable unity of spirit that has informed Indian culture throughout the ages. This underlying unity is one of the most remarkable features of Indian culture.
In volume and duration no civilization (except perhaps the Chinese) can compare with India. The vitality of Indian culture is amazing; it has survived a thousand vicissitudes because of a sense of Indianness that imposed unity on all diversity.
The spirit of toleration (“Live and let live”) has characterised Indian history. This has enabled contradictory attitudes to survive side by side. Indian culture has grown and changed but never at the expense of its underlying unity. This has been possible due to the capacity of readjustment in Indian society.
Culture is the efflorescence of civilization. Civilization creates the condition for culture. In India, culture has permeated every class and section of society with unbroken continuity — a unique feature not found elsewhere.
Hindi Summary (सारांश)
