2. The Old Woman (बूढ़ी औरत)

3. The Challenge (चुनौती)

4. The Power of Language

Chapter Summary English & Hindi

English Summary

In her Nobel Lecture “Once Upon a Time,” Toni Morrison tells the story of a blind but wise old woman, the daughter of slaves, who lives alone outside town. Her reputation for wisdom is unmatched.

One day young people visit her to test and mock her. They hold a bird in their hands and ask whether it is living or dead, knowing she cannot see. After a long silence she replies that she does not know if the bird is dead or alive, but she knows it is in their hands.

The young visitors are reprimanded for their mockery and for the life they may have sacrificed. Morrison reads the bird as “language” and the woman as a “practiced writer.”

Language, she says, protects us from the scariness of unnamed things and is itself meditation. The future of language belongs to the young. In the end the old woman trusts them with the bird that is no longer in their hands because they have truly caught its meaning. Together they have created something lovely.

The speech emphasises the living power of language and the responsibility that comes with it.

Hindi Summary (सारांश)
