English Summary

One morning Mahadevi Verma noticed two crows attacking a tiny baby squirrel that had fallen from its nest. Everyone thought the squirrel would die, but she gently picked it up, cleaned its wounds with cotton and applied Penicillin ointment. After great difficulty she managed to feed it milk.

Within a few days the squirrel recovered. In three-four months it grew beautiful fur, a bushy tail and bright eyes. The family named it Gillu. A small flower basket lined with cotton was hung on the window as its home for two years.

Gillu became extremely affectionate. It would twitter “chik-chik” when hungry, love cashew nuts (kaju), climb curtains to attract attention, sit near the narrator’s plate, and even stroke her forehead when she was ill. In summer it would lie on the cool surahi to stay close to her.

Seeing Gillu look longingly outside, the narrator made an opening in the wire-mesh so that it could go free. Gillu enjoyed the outside world but always returned.

Squirrels live only about two years. One day Gillu stopped eating. At night it came to the narrator’s bed and held her finger with its cold claws. In the morning it died. The narrator buried Gillu under the Sonjuhi creeper, believing that one spring day it would bloom again as a tiny yellow Juhi flower.

The story is a beautiful portrayal of love, compassion and the deep bond between humans and animals.
