English Summary

In “The Pace for Living,” R. C. Hutchinson discusses the fast pace of modern life and its effect on human beings. He begins with a play he saw in Dublin. The chief character, an elderly Irish corn-merchant, is overloaded with worries – weak heart, cheating nephew and a spendthrift wife. In despair he cries that an aeroplane flying at 1,000 miles an hour is “too fast.”

The writer finds the complaint amusing yet revealing. He himself does not dislike speed. He enjoys fast driving and the excitement of modern travel. However, he objects when the mental activities of our time are forced to follow the pace of machines.

Hutchinson admits he belongs to the tribe of “slow thinkers.” Such people think of the best reply only hours after a conversation is over and score poorly in intelligence tests that measure speed of mind rather than depth.
